Coloured diamonds are a lot rarer than the common white diamond. For that reason they are also considerably more expensive than a white diamond. With white diamonds the two main characteristics that are important are the colour and clarity of the diamond. For coloured diamonds the most important characteristics are the colour of the diamond and the depth of that colour.

Coloured diamonds are starting to become very popular with brides for their centre diamond in their engagement rings and also for the small little diamonds within their wedding rings. Men are starting to use black diamonds within their wedding rings rather than a plain gold or platinum band.

Coloured diamonds can come in quiet a range of different colours. The price can vary extravagantly with the different degree of intensity of colour.

Coloured diamonds are now being called investment stones due to their value and rarity. These diamonds tend to increase in value at a rate that is better than the interest rate that you would get from any of the commercial banks. For instance the Argyle Pink Diamond mine is said to have less than 10 years of mining left in it. There are reports stating that once this mine closes that all Argyle Pink diamonds will increase in value dramatically.
