Carat Weight – Understanding Diamond Size & Value
Carat weight is the standard unit of measurement used to weigh diamonds. One carat equals 0.20 grams and is divided into 100 points. This means:
- 0.50 carat = 50 points (½ carat)
- 0.75 carat = 75 points (¾ carat)
- 1.00 carat = 100 points (1 carat)
While carat weight is one of the most visible factors when buying a diamond, it is not the only factor that determines price or beauty. Two diamonds of the exact same carat weight can look very different in size and sparkle dramatically depending on how well they are cut.
Why Two Diamonds of the Same Carat Weight Can Look Different
Diamonds are weighed by carat, not measured by size. A poorly cut diamond can appear much smaller than a well-cut diamond of the same weight.
- If a diamond is cut too shallow, it will have a larger diameter but lose brilliance and fire.
- If a diamond is cut too deep, it will have a smaller face-up diameter and appear smaller than it should.
A beautifully cut diamond will deliver maximum face-up size and exceptional sparkle.
Real Example – 1.00 Carat Round Diamond
| Cut Quality | Approximate Diameter | Appearance | Sparkle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excellent Cut | ~6.5mm | Looks its full size, bright & lively | Outstanding |
| Poor Cut (Too Deep) | ~6.1mm | Looks noticeably smaller | Dull |
As you can see, the poorly cut 1.00ct diamond can appear closer to a 0.90ct stone — meaning you’re paying for a full carat but not getting the visual size or beauty you deserve.
